Bitcoin Drops to $65,770: DeFi Liquidation Risk Mounts
Bitcoin slid to $65,770, down 5.63% in 24h per Binance data, while Ethereum broke below $2,000. Here's what the sell-off means for DeFi TVL and liquidation risk.
Bitcoin slid to $65,770, shedding 5.63% in 24 hours per Binance data, while Ethereum broke below the $2,000 level. The simultaneous decline in the two largest collateral assets puts DeFi lending protocols squarely in the liquidation danger zone.
BTC at $65,770 and ETH Below $2,000: Lending Protocols Face Liquidation Cascade Risk
Bitcoin fell to $65,770 over a 24-hour window, a 5.63% decline first flagged by Bitcoin Magazine via Binance data. Ethereum dropped below the psychologically significant $2,000 threshold during the same period.
The story for DeFi is not the price decline itself, but what it means for collateral posted on lending protocols. On Aave v3 and Compound III, borrowers pledge wBTC and ETH against stablecoin loans. When collateral value drops 5% or more in a single day, health factors deteriorate rapidly, pushing leveraged positions closer to automatic liquidation.
Wrapped BTC (wBTC) is a critical collateral vector in DeFi lending. Positions that were healthy at $69,000 BTC now carry significantly thinner margins of safety at $65,770, and any further leg down risks triggering cascading on-chain liquidations.
ETH below $2,000 compounds the pressure. Ethereum serves as the dominant collateral asset across DeFi lending on both mainnet and Layer 2 networks. Earlier this week, a separate volatility event triggered $258 million in crypto liquidations within four hours, with Bitcoin positions accounting for $118 million of that total.
TVL Contraction and Yield Compression Across DeFi Lending Markets
A simultaneous decline in BTC and ETH mechanically reduces total value locked across lending protocols. When collateral prices fall, the dollar-denominated TVL on Aave v3 Ethereum, Compound III, and Spark contracts by definition. Liquidations accelerate the effect as collateral is seized and sold into stablecoins.
Borrow and supply rates on ETH and stablecoin markets typically compress during sharp drawdowns. As collateral gets unwound or liquidated, the available supply of stablecoins increases relative to borrow demand, driving yields down for lenders.
Layer 2 protocols often see sharper TVL drawdowns than Ethereum mainnet during sell-offs, as smaller pools amplify the percentage impact of collateral exits. The divergence between mainnet and L2 TVL behavior is worth monitoring as this move plays out.
The broader crypto market weakness extends beyond BTC and ETH. Finance Magnates reported that XRP and Dogecoin also fell as the market tested key support levels, suggesting a risk-off environment rather than an isolated BTC event.
Protocol Risk Outlook: Which DeFi Platforms Are Most Exposed if BTC Breaks Below $65K
The $65,000 BTC level is the next critical threshold. A sustained break below it would push a larger pool of wBTC-collateralized positions into liquidation zones on major lending protocols, particularly on Aave v3 where wBTC markets carry the highest open borrowing.
Aave’s Safety Module, funded by staked AAVE tokens, is the protocol’s primary backstop against bad debt from cascading liquidations. Compound III relies on governance-controlled supply and borrow caps to limit exposure. Both mechanisms are designed to absorb single-day shocks of this magnitude, but rapid, sustained declines can outpace these buffers.
Institutional flow data adds context to the risk picture. Bitcoin ETF outflows hit $171 million on March 26 while Ethereum ETFs recorded $92.54 million in inflows, suggesting divergent positioning that could amplify volatility across centralized and decentralized venues alike.
For DeFi participants, the focus should be on health factor management: monitoring collateral ratios, understanding protocol-specific liquidation penalties, and watching for any governance proposals that adjust risk parameters in response to this volatility. The question is not where BTC goes next, but whether protocol safety mechanisms can absorb the stress if it keeps falling.
