Circle cirBTC Launch Targets Coinbase Wrapped Bitcoin Market

Circle plans to launch cirBTC, its own wrapped Bitcoin product, setting up a direct challenge to Coinbase and reshaping competition in tokenized BTC markets.

·4 min readMakeDefilibanpreferred onGoogle

Circle plans to bring a new wrapped Bitcoin token, cirBTC, into DeFi, adding another institutional issuer to a market where tokenized BTC already functions as collateral, routing liquidity and a bridge between Bitcoin exposure and smart-contract rails. For users on Ethereum, the announcement matters less as a branding exercise and more as a new claim on wrapped-BTC trust, reserve visibility and future liquidity.

Circle’s cirBTC page says the token is coming soon, will be backed 1:1 by BTC, and will have reserves that are readily and independently verifiable onchain. The same page says cirBTC will launch on Ethereum and Arc first, which gives the announcement immediate relevance for DeFi venues where wrapped Bitcoin is already used as collateral and settlement inventory.

Circle also says the rollout remains subject to applicable regulatory approvals, and the page presents the product as informational rather than a binding commitment to launch. That language means the announcement is still a pre-launch product page, not a live issuance event.

CIRBTC STATUS CHECK

  • Circle says cirBTC is coming soon.
  • The launch remains subject to applicable regulatory approvals.
  • Circle has not published a precise launch date or live contract addresses.

Circle’s wrapped-BTC pitch is about reserve visibility

At this stage, cirBTC is best understood as Circle’s planned wrapped Bitcoin rail, not as a fully specified product. The differentiator Circle is emphasizing in the available brief is onchain reserve verifiability, a point that maps directly to DeFi users who care about redemption confidence and collateral transparency more than branding language.

By naming Ethereum and Arc first, Circle is signaling that cirBTC is aimed at the existing smart-contract economy rather than at native Bitcoin settlement. That positioning is consistent with how wrapped BTC is typically used in lending, trading and stablecoin-adjacent liquidity strategies, even though Circle has not yet disclosed the operating details needed to compare cirBTC with live alternatives.

Coinbase already has the live operating history

Coinbase launched cbBTC on September 12, 2024 as a wrapped BTC token backed 1:1 by Bitcoin held by Coinbase, initially on Base and Ethereum. That gives Coinbase a real issuance and redemption track record today, while Circle is still at the announcement stage.

Coinbase’s proof-of-reserves page showed 88,455.2 BTC backing 88,444.42 cbBTC, refreshed on April 3, 2026. For DeFi users, that is the core operational gap in the current comparison: cbBTC already has a live reserve view, while cirBTC does not yet have public contracts or a published dashboard.

  • cbBTC supply: 88,444.42 cbBTC
  • Last refresh: April 3, 2026

Competitive language still needs caveats. A single Decrypt report framed cirBTC as a direct move against cbBTC, but Circle’s own cirBTC page does not name Coinbase. The cleaner conclusion is that Circle is entering a segment where Coinbase is already established, not that Circle has published a head-to-head launch manifesto.

The wrapped-BTC market is already large enough to matter

The size of the incumbent market helps explain why Circle would want a wrapped Bitcoin product of its own. CoinGecko market data in the research brief showed wrapped-bitcoin at roughly $7.93 billion in market capitalization, a reminder that tokenized BTC is already a large pool of onchain collateral and trading liquidity.

The same CoinGecko dataset put coinbase-wrapped-btc at about $5.91 billion in market cap, showing cbBTC has already reached multi-billion scale. That matters because Circle is not entering an empty niche, it is stepping into a market where an exchange-linked wrapper has already accumulated meaningful liquidity.

The gap between $7.93 billion for WBTC and $5.91 billion for cbBTC suggests the wrapped-BTC market can support multiple large issuers, but the data also shows Circle is arriving after the category has already consolidated a large base of trust and liquidity. Readers following DefiLiban’s coverage of Strategy’s estimated BTC buying via STRC have seen the same theme elsewhere in Bitcoin markets, institutional wrappers and treasury vehicles are increasingly competing to intermediate BTC exposure rather than just hold the asset outright.

What DeFi users still need before cirBTC is usable

The missing fields are not cosmetic. Without contract addresses, issuance and redemption mechanics, custody disclosures, a fee schedule and a live reserve endpoint, DeFi users cannot yet model cirBTC’s smart-contract risk, redemption friction or likely venue integrations.

  • Circle has not published a precise launch date for cirBTC.
  • Circle has not disclosed contract addresses or mint and redeem mechanics.
  • Circle has not identified custody counterparties, fees or a live reserve dashboard.

That makes the most defensible read today fairly narrow. Circle has announced a BTC-backed wrapped token with onchain-verifiable reserves as a stated design goal, but Coinbase already has a live wrapper with public reserves, and DeFi users still lack the operating detail needed to judge whether cirBTC can compete on liquidity, trust and composability once it goes live.
